Milan menswear S/S 2008

MILAN- Even though the air was morose due to Gianfranco Ferre's horrible and unexpected death, Saturday in Milan kicked off with closet-worthy collections once more. But with the lose of Gianfranco Ferre we're noticing how some spring colors are proving to be rather mute regardless of how uncorrelated to his death.

Jil Sander

Raf's consistency pleased minimalists once more. It's now safe to deem Raf a 'philosopher of fashion' because the collections remain basic, relevant, logical, and reasonable. No need for added distractions to prove his point; the clothing speaks for itself. As an advocate of repetition, Raf keeps his shoulders broad with the outerwear, but then retracts it for the well tailored suits. Like previous collections he still incorporated the hidden placard. It seems as if Raf experimented with poly again. As you recall, the blue poly jackets from spring and summer last year were pinned to the board as “novelty” items, but this season it appears poly functions as typical casual wear. The question is, “is this material poly?” Do note Raf is a master of synthetics, but we'll learn the material content as soon as all the buyers purchase the entire collection.

Burberry

Perhaps the Burberry show was an homage to Hedi Slimane's leave, but the items on the runway can be deemed as Micheal Jackson meets English rockstar, yet in a fun way. The change of direction Christopher Bailey provided was somewhat shocking. Skin tight boots likened to scuba gear while sheer tops with golden appliqué strips was present. Dress shirts had a patent leather texture and plastic was cut into outerwear. If I need say more, a fully sequined golden blazer glistened the runway. There were enough sequins to put previous John Galliano works to shame. Meanwhile, there were more wearable clothing mixed among all the flashy. Bailey took the trench, a Burberry classic, and slimmed it up, and then belted it- a risky womenswear trend to apply to menswear.

Versace

It's apparent we see Alexandre Plokhov's hand roaming about in the matter in some of the colors- his usual red and black, and the militant factor. The sleek silhouette is tight, kept the Versace identity, but wasn't too loud and is still wearable for a man. No teenager-esque clothing here.
